on that shooting at the sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. nbc news is reporting as many as 27 people may be dead from that shooting which broke out this morning shortly after 9:30. that's when police were called. as many as 17 to 18 of the victims are children. 7 to 8 adults including the gunman who authorities described to nbc news as a 20-year-old connecticut man who was dressed in black and was carrying two handguns. connecticut state police are set to begin a briefing at this hour. danbury officials and hospital officials tell nbc news that at least three people have been transported to the hospital. again, to as many as 27 people killed. we will bring you more details as they become available. back to you. >> thank you very much, bertha. we'll keep checking back with you and monitoring the situation. obviously an incredibly tragic situation still unfolding in newtown, connecticut. we will keep you up to date as new information does become available, but right now we turn our attention to what we do here at cnbc. our focus is the markets. we will be following the other sto
to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, there'll be fewer atrocities like the one in newtown for any of the lesser-known tragedies that visit small towns and big cities all across america every day. since friday morning, police officer was gunned down in memphis leaving four children without their mother. two officers were killed outside a grocery store in topeka. the woman was shot and killed inside a las vegas casino. three people were shot inside an alabama hospital. a four-year-old was caught in a drive-by in missouri. taken off life support just yesterday. each one of these americans was a victim of the everyday gun violence that takes the lives of more than 10,000 americans every year. violence that we cannot accept as routine. so i will use all the powers of this office to help advance efforts aimed at preventing more tragedies like this. we won't prevent them all, but that can't be an excuse not to try. it won't be easy, but that can't be an excuse not to try. and i will not be able to do it by myself. ultimately if this effort is to succeed, it will require the help

of the tragedy in newtown we can't but help draw attention to a product, and that is the 3-d precipitating of handguns. they renewed the federal ban on plastic guns that is set to expire at the end of the year. as you heard on the program this technology does exist. it's already entirely possible to print a handgun using plastic components. and cannot be traced or identify identified. legislation around new technology like plastic guns is critical but it's clearly not enough. the biden task force that the president recently announced to help identify solutions is certainly a step in the right direction. the decision to veto a new law to conceal guns on college campuses and daycare and hospitals made good sense. but walmart and others have suspended the sale of some military style assault weapons. why they were selling them in the first place is a conversation for another time. all of that still is not enough. like so many others i'm calling for tougher gun control measures. at the very minimum they must include three key things. first we must get a ban once and for all on all assault wea

up on me this year with sandy and everything that went on here in the northeast and then the newtown, connecticut tragedy, all of a sudden i found that christmas. yesterday i went and visited a parishioner in the hospital who is dying, 80 years old, very good man of the i knew he was dying. but somebody had taught me along the way that when you're leaving the hospital as a priest, a tradition that i started through his example, i just said, is there anybody -- i asked the nursed, is there anybody who doesn't have any family that i could visit? because as a clergy member, they allow know do it. they said, well, there is someone, but he's not doing well. i said, well, take me to see him. and these two nurses, nervously walked me over. as soon as he saw us from above, he started getting very angry, tahj tated. he started beating on his bed. he was lying there obviously dying. about 45 years old, of a terrible disease. and they said, father, let's get out of here. we can't handle this. i said, let me stay a little bit longer. i took one step closer and he started getting furious. they sa
